What is this Waypoint?
As your son or daughter prepares to leave home, you have one final milestone in the Faith Path. Whether they are heading to college, entering the workforce, joining the military, or beginning another season of life, this transition is an opportunity to intentionally send them into adulthood with confidence, encouragement, and a faith that is their own.
Throughout the Faith Path, your goal has never been simply to raise a successful adult. It has been to help your child become a lifelong follower of Jesus. As they enter this next season, your role continues to change from daily instruction to faithful encouragement, wise counsel, and intentional prayer.
This is not the end of your influence—it is the beginning of a new season of it.
"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9
Preparing Them to Follow Jesus
As your young adult begins making decisions independently, they will face questions about work, relationships, finances, church, purpose, and calling.
While you may not always have the answers, you can continually point them back to God's Word and encourage them to seek the Lord first in every decision.
Remind them that success is not measured by a career, salary, or accomplishments, but by faithfully following Jesus wherever He leads.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." — Proverbs 3:5–6

Here are a few intentional ways to prepare your young adult for this next season.
Keep the Conversation Going
Your influence doesn't end when your child leaves home. Continue asking questions, listening well, encouraging them, and praying with them as they begin making decisions on their own.
Point Them Toward Biblical Wisdom
As your young adult considers education, career, relationships, marriage, and future plans, encourage them to make decisions through the lens of Scripture rather than culture or convenience.
Help them remember that their identity and purpose remain rooted in Christ no matter where life takes them.
Prepare for Everyday Life
Take time to help your young adult build confidence in practical life skills before they leave home. Consider walking through areas such as:
- Budgeting and managing money
- Cooking simple meals
- Laundry and household responsibilities
- Basic car maintenance
- Healthcare and insurance
- Time management
- Finding and committing to a healthy local church
- Building healthy friendships and community
- Living with integrity in work, school, and relationships
Preparing them practically communicates confidence while helping them step into adulthood responsibly.
Write a Letter of Blessing
Before your son or daughter leaves home, write them a personal letter.
Celebrate who they have become, remind them of God's faithfulness throughout their life, encourage them toward the future, and assure them that your love, prayers, and support will continue wherever God leads them.
A written blessing often becomes something they return to for years to come.
Pray and Commission Them
Take intentional time to pray over your young adult before they leave home. Ask God to strengthen their faith, surround them with godly community, give them wisdom, and use them to make an impact for His Kingdom.
Remember that while they may be leaving your home, they are never leaving God's care.
"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act." — Psalm 37:5
Questions to Discuss Before They Leave
Use the final weeks or months before this transition to talk through both practical life skills and spiritual readiness.
Consider asking:
- Have we talked about budgeting and financial stewardship?
- Do you know how to care for your health and your home?
- Have you found a Bible-believing church where you can grow and serve?
- Who will encourage your walk with Christ?
- What spiritual habits do you want to continue after leaving home?
- How can we stay connected and continue encouraging one another?
These conversations are an opportunity to reinforce both practical wisdom and lifelong faith.
