What is this Waypoint?

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is helping them learn how to talk with God. Prayer is how we communicate with and stay connected to our Heavenly Father, it’s not about having the “right words,” but about building a real relationship with Him.

Just as the disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1), you have the opportunity to guide your child in discovering what prayer looks like in everyday life, both personally and as a family. 

At Fellowship Bible Church, we believe prayer isn’t a last resort—it’s the first and most powerful thing we can do. Before we act, decide, or respond, we go to God. Teaching your child this truth will shape how they face every situation in life.

Remember the Impact
Praying with your child strengthens your relationship, nurtures their faith, and rbings peace into your home. There is something powerful about a child regularly hearing their parent pray over them. Start small; even a short prayer at bedtime or before the day begins cans make a lasting difference.

Be an Example
Let your child see and hear you pray regulary, not just in routine moments, but in real life. When something exciting happens, pause and thank God. When something is hard, stop and pray. Show them prayer is your first response, not your last option.

Start Simple Together
Create space for short, honest prayers. Take turns sharing one-sentence prayers like: "Thank you for torday." "Please help me with..." "I'm sorry for..."

Use Prayer Starters

  • "God, I love you because..."
  • "Thank you, Jesus, for..."
  • "God, please help..."
  • "Father, I'm sorry for..."

For Older Kids
Encourage them to begin praying on their own and in their own words. Help them see prayer as something they can turn to throughout the day, not just at set times. 

For Teens
Invite them to see prayer as a daily, honest conversation with God. Encourage them to bring real struggles, questions, joys, and decitions to Him, and remind them that prayer is where we start, not where we end.
