Purity

What is this Waypoint?

The purity waypoint is about much more than avoiding certain behaviors. It is about honoring God with our hearts, minds, bodies, and relationships. As parents, you have the opportunity to help your child understand God's design for sexuality, relationships, and identity while building a foundation of biblical wisdom and trust.

Our culture has many competing messages about sex, relationships, and personal identity. Because of this, it is important that conversations about purity begin at home and continue throughout every stage of your child's development. Rather than waiting for difficult questions or challenging situations to arise, parents can intentionally help their children understand God's good design and establish healthy boundaries rooted in Scripture.

God created us in His image and designed sexuality as a gift to be enjoyed within the covenant of marriage. Purity is not simply about saying "no" to sin; it is about saying "yes" to God's best and learning to honor Him in every area of life.

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” — Psalm 119:9

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is an understanding of God's design before they encounter confusing or competing messages from the world around them.

Purity conversations should not be limited to a single talk. Instead, look for opportunities to have ongoing, age-appropriate conversations about relationships, identity, media, temptation, and God's design for sexuality. Creating an environment where questions are welcomed helps your child know they can come to you when challenges arise.

“Flee from sexual immorality... you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Growing in Wisdom and Character

Purity begins long before a person faces sexual temptation. It grows through developing self-control, wisdom, integrity, and a desire to honor God.

As you disciple your child, help them understand that every choice matters. Encourage them to think critically about the influences they allow into their lives and to pursue friendships and relationships that encourage their walk with Christ.

Remind them that their value and identity are not found in appearance, popularity, relationships, or accomplishments, but in being loved and created by God.

Next steps:

Here are a few practical ways to help your child grow in purity:

Start Conversations Early

Don't wait for your child to bring up difficult topics. Create regular opportunities to talk about God's design for relationships, sexuality, and identity in ways that are appropriate for their age and maturity.

Keep Communication Open

Create a home where questions are welcomed and answered with grace and truth. Let your child know they can talk to you about anything without fear of shame or embarrassment.

Establish Healthy Boundaries

Help your child understand the importance of setting boundaries before they encounter tempting or difficult situations. Discuss media choices, technology use, friendships, and relationships through a biblical lens.

Point Them to God's Design

Regularly remind your child that God's commands are given for our good. Help them see that purity is not about rules alone, but about trusting God's wisdom and living according to His design.

Model Integrity

Children learn from what they see. Demonstrate healthy relationships, respect for others, and a commitment to honoring God with your own choices and priorities.

Pray

Pray regularly for your child's heart, relationships, future marriage (if God leads them there), and their commitment to follow Jesus. Ask God to give them wisdom, discernment, and courage to honor Him.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” — Matthew 5:8
