What is this Waypoint?
When your child(ren) begin to better understand who God is and how faith connects to everyday life, it is a great season to help them see that worship is more than singing songs at church; worship is our response to the greatness of God.
As parents, you have the opportunity to help your child learn that worship is both an attitude and an action. Jesus taught that true worship begins in the heart (John 4:23). Worship happens when we turn our attention toward God, celebrating who He is, what He has done, and responding to Him with gratitude, obedience, praise, and trust.
Personal Worship
One of the best ways to teach your child about worship is by modeling it yourself. Children learn what matters most by watching the adults around them.
Help your child notice God’s goodness in everyday life. Celebrate answered prayers, talk about God’s character, and point out His creativity and faithfulness in the world around you. Worship grows when we intentionally focus on God instead of ourselves.
“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.” Psalm 29:2 (NIV)
Worship Together
Worship is also something we do together as a family and as a church. Gathering with other believers helps children see that worship is an important part of following Jesus.
Throughout your week, you can create simple moments of worship at home through prayer, Scripture, music, and/or conversations about God. Family worship does not have to be complicated, small, or organized. I can be through basic conversation and rhythms you are already living out. Consistent moments can have a lasting impact.
“Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of the godly!” Psalm 149:1 (NIV)
Next Steps:
Here are a few simple ways to help your child grow in worship:
- Encourage gratitude and praise in everyday conversations.
- Spend a few minutes around the table or in the car as a family taking turns saying something about who God is and what He has done. Try to avoid mentioning yourselves; focus completely on Him.
- Attend church as a family.
- Listen to worship music together at home or in the car.
- Ask your child questions about God’s character, creation, and faithfulness.
- Write “God, You are…” on a mirror, whiteboard, or sticky note and add worshipful responses together throughout the week.
